bio
Gary Franklin was a well-known German-American film critic and news reporter. Born on September 22, 1928, in Leipzig, Germany, his family emigrated to the United States in 1938 to escape Nazi persecution. They changed their surname from Zlotnitzki to Franklin upon arrival. Franklin graduated with a degree in film from the City College of New York.

He began his broadcasting career in 1954, working at various radio and television stations across the United States. By 1972, he had moved to Los Angeles, where he became a news reporter for KFWB radio. He later joined KNXT (now KCBS-TV) as a film critic and was best known for his work at KABC-TV from 1986 to 1991, where he developed the “Franklin Scale,” a 1-to-10 rating system for movies.

Franklin also served as a photographer, documenting major 20th-century events and Hollywood personalities. He passed away on October 2, 2007, in Chatsworth, California, at the age of 79.
